Our History

Home from Home Housing Association (HFH) was founded as a co-operative in 1985 by a group of Black female social workers who recognised the urgent need for culturally appropriate housing for women and children facing homelessness. Driven by the principle ‘For the people, by the people’, HFH was born from lived experience and a shared determination to challenge inequality.

In 1989 we developed a hostel for young unsupported mothers and In 1991 HFH became a fully Registered Social Landlord, marking a significant milestone in our growth and formalising our long-term commitment to delivering high-quality supported housing. Over the decades, we have grown steadily while remaining true to our founding values of empowerment, cultural understanding, and community-led structure.

Today, HFH also provides permanent general needs housing, as well as second stage move-on accommodation for hostel residents, representing a complete journey of housing support and our continued dedication to support the communities that we were setup to serve.

In total today, we manage 52 properties across the London Borough of Newham and surrounding areas, providing vital housing and support services to women, children, and families. We also deliver repairs and maintenance services to partner organisations within the local housing network reinforcing our wider commitment to the community.

Throughout our history, our mission has remained clear: to prevent homelessness, to offer care that understands and reflects the realities of the women and families we serve, and to help build stronger, more resilient communities, one step at a time.
